Prescription medications can become a significant part of your healthcare expenses. Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of both brand-name and generic prescription drugs.

If you have Original Medicare, you can purchase a stand-alone Part D plan from a private insurance company approved by Medicare. Each plan has its own premiums, covered medications, pharmacy network, and out-of-pocket costs. Medicare.gov

Why Comparing Plans Matters

Part D plans are not all the same. A plan that works well for one person may be unnecessarily expensive or may not cover the right medications for someone else.

Before selecting a plan, consider:

  • Are your prescriptions included on the plan’s formulary?

  • What will you pay for each medication?

  • Is your preferred pharmacy in the plan’s network?

  • Would another pharmacy offer lower costs?

  • What are the plan’s premium, deductible, copays, and coinsurance?

Review Your Coverage Every Year

Your prescriptions may change—and so can your plan. Formularies, pharmacy networks, premiums, and medication costs may be different the following year.

That is why reviewing your Part D coverage during the Annual Enrollment Period is important, even when you are satisfied with your current plan.

Don’t Overlook the Late-Enrollment Penalty

If you go 63 consecutive days or longer without Part D or other creditable prescription drug coverage after becoming eligible, you may face a late-enrollment penalty when you enroll later. In many cases, that penalty continues for as long as you have Medicare drug coverage. Medicare.gov

Choose Based on Your Needs

The lowest premium does not automatically mean the lowest overall cost. The right plan should be evaluated using your medications, dosages, preferred pharmacies, and budget.

You have choices—and you do not have to sort through them alone.

We can help you compare available Medicare Part D plans and choose coverage that

provides the right medications, pharmacy access, and overall value for your needs.
